What is ATAS?

Updated: Oct 13

You may have seen the ATAS logo or heard ATAS mentioned before, but do you know what it means?

ATAS is a voluntary membership scheme which travel agencies and tour operators can join to show they are creditable and well-trained professionals. When agencies and operators join ATAS, they undergo a point-in-time assessment against the criteria of the ATAS Charter.

Agents and operators who are ATAS accredited have met strict ATAS Charter criteria and are well trained professionals. They are also required to conduct business in compliance with Australian Consumer Law and in accordance with the ATAS Charter and Code of Conduct.

You can even go to the ATAS website to check that a travel agent or tour operator displaying this logo is really accredited.

When looking for a travel agent or tour operator it's recommended to look for the ATAS accreditation logo like this one. This doesn't mean that the Travel agents that aren't ATAS accredited are dodgy or bad at their job, they may have just chosen not to apply for the ATAS membership.

ATAS also has some other great information on their site, like travel alerts, traveller information, holiday checklists and information about International Driving Permits. They even have a great travel blog.

Check out their website here  https://www.atas.com.au/
